Studio Visit | Bea Bonafini

A peek inside the domestic environment of artist Bea Bonafini

As I enter Bea Bonafini’s studio located on a rooftop by London Fields, I wonder if I’ve accidentally arrived somewhere I’m not supposed to be. An elongated grass terrace greets me, while surrounding glass windows make visible the panoramic views of east London. Surrounded by pattern reflections created by the light entering the space through the windows, Bea's works are slightly distorted by the different shades coming through. There is a feeling of comforting nature absorbing the environment of her studio. In the artist's own words, "For the recent carpet piece and drawing for Zabludowicz Invites, the setting of my studio influenced the tonalities of blues, greens, and greys, as I work in something like a tree house". Bonafini's work seems to integrate perfectly within her working space, becoming an extension of it. The artist achieves a rich familiarity with the objects she creates, by making functional objects, such as chairs, that are slightly distorted.
